Bham has Best and Worst of Gender Pay Gap at AL Universities

April 14th, 2009

According to an article in the Birmingham News and a survey by the American Association of University Professors, female professors at universities around Alabama are getting paid less than their male colleagues.

Out of all the major schools in Alabama, Birmingham is home to those with the largest and smallest disparities between males and females. UAB was the most fair in the state, with women earning 92% of what men earn. Samford, however, was the lowest with women only making 82% as much as men. UAB Students Tap into World Water Week

March 23rd, 2009

The UAB news reports that students are promoting World Water Week at several restaurants around town.

Many people opt for water for one of two reasons — it’s healthier than sweet tea or a soft drink, and it’s also cheaper. The majority of area restaurants don’t charge a penny for water, saving patrons up to $2 in many establishments.

One UAB group is trying to change that during World Water Week, March 22-28. The Student Association for Graduate Education (SAGE) in Maternal & Child Health is encouraging local restaurants to ask their customers to donate $1 or more to raise money for the Tap Project, a UNICEF endeavor to improve water and sanitation projects around the world.

The restaurants in Birmingham include: Rojo, Lucy’s, Silver Coin Indian Grill, Bettola, Petruccelli’s Italian Eatery and Café Lazio. Visit tapproject.org to locate these and other participating restaurants.
