Public Transit Getting Only 2% of State Transportation Stimulus Money

April 3rd, 2009

According to an article in the Bham News the state will be using about $100 million on “transportation” projects. Of that, only about $2 million is going to the Birmingham Transit Authority. All the rest is going to repaving and making new lanes to “relieve” congestion when really it will just allow more cars to get through and actually cause more congestion over the long run.

I realize this money had to go to the entire state but Birmingham is the biggest city with the biggest potential to move the state forward by having a good transit system that visitors and residents alike would use and enjoy. You would think that with all this Federal money coming in, someone would actually think that it was time to get serious about public transportation which would get cars off the road and thus also relieve congestion and save the roads from some wear and tear. Nope, not this time.
