Bike to Brewfest

June 2nd, 2009

A lot of people are probably going to the Magic City Brewfest this weekend, but probably not a lot of people were planning on riding their bikes. Well now, if saving money, being green, and having fun weren’t enough, there’s even more incentive for doing so. Birmingham’s bike advocate, Bici Cooperative, is going to be doing bike valet at the Brewfest. In case you’re wondering what that is, just think regular car valet, except with something a lot more fun and green: a BIKE!

That’s right. Just pull up on your bike, get a ticket from them and go inside and drink to your heart’s content knowing that your precious two-wheeler is in safe hands. Even if you’re coming from out of town, you could just find somewhere to park that’s free (I don’t believe Sloss Furnace has free parking) and then ride into the fest to save some money. Or, if you’d rather, participate in one of the 2 park-and-rides going to the Brewfest. Of course, by ride, I don’t mean sitting in a van… I mean riding your bike. Bici will be leading a ride from Birmingham Botanical Gardens (2:15pm) and one from Crestwood Coffee (2:45pm).

So now, on top of saving money and the planet, being outside (of your car) on a nice summer day, and looking cool/hip/smart by riding your bike, there’s also the assurance that your bike will be safe while you’re enjoying Brewfest. So why wouldn’t you ride your bike there?

Magic City Brewfest 2009 Dates and Special Brews Announced

March 19th, 2009

This year the Magic City Brewfest benefitting Free the Hops will be held on June 5th-6th.

Birmingham brewers Good People Brewing Co. is going to brew a special, one-off release you’ll only be able to sample at the Brewfest!

Also, if you volunteer to work for one session, you get to attend the other session for free… and get a shirt. Pretty sweet deal! In this economy, trading labor for beer is just about one of the smartest things I’ve ever heard of.

Free the… Price per Alcohol Content Labeling?

March 11th, 2009

So a version of the Free the Hops Gourmet Beer Bill will go in front of the State Senate tomorrow, March 12th. Although, it’s not the same bill that the house just passed, it would be easy to assume that if the Senate passes their version, then one of the two bills will pass both houses.

My question is, well, what next? What will Free the Hops do with all their organizational power and presence? Surely they won’t just fizzle away into a drunken stupor while enjoying all their new high-alcohol content beers.

We here at freeThinkBham.com have been talking about it and have decided they should work on making beer have labels that tell you the price you’re paying per ounce of actual alcohol. That would be pretty, pretty, pretty helpful. Whole Foods and several other stores tell you the price per weight you’re getting for items like cereal so you can compare easily. Why not do it with beer? We’re tired of having to break out our iPhone calculators in the middle of the store to find out how to get the best bang for our buck.

Anyone else have any ideas? Free the Weed?
