Although dog-park advocates Bark for a Park haven’t been able to nail down a functional full-time dog park just yet, they will be sponsoring a fun festival on October 3rd that will have a working dog park demonstration. It’ll only be set up that day from 10am-3pm but if I understand correctly, during that time you can come and pretend–even if for a brief moment–that your dog is playing in an actual dog park in Birmingham. Sounds great doesn’t it? For this short time you’ll be able to let your four-legged children run and play as free as can be without having to worry about people being scared of your dog, your dog running away or into a road, or that someone will be offended that your dog is peeing on their precious field.
The event will have live music, food and drink vendors, raffles and pet adoptions. They are, however, still looking for more vendors, donations, and volunteers so if you are interested, please contact barkforapark@yahoo.com. Hope to see you there!

There are some simple things you can do to save money and help the planet with man’s best friend. I have a Lab-mutt and a Greyhound and this is what we do to try to stay green around the house.

1. Compost Dog Hair – You spend all day sweeping it up, why let those nutrients go to waste? Compost it and use it in your garden.
2. Let the Dog Pre-rinse Your Dishes – Rather than wasting a lot of extra water to pre-rinse your dishes, scrape the big chunks off and let your dog do the rest. You can then stack them to wash later, or load them straight into the dishwasher.
3. Use Dog Food Bags as Trash Bags – Large bags of dogfood aren’t usually recyclable and they practically take up half your trash can to throw them away. Why not just use it as the trash bag itself? The big bags are the perfect size for tall kitchen trash cans and they are much stronger than plastic bags.

This was one of the dogs shot by the Birmingham Pig Dept. this week in Southside. It seems the BPD just can’t stay out of the news for overly-aggressive behavior. Of course, they are trying to say they were fearing for their lives, but almost every normal person in the world knows that dogs are mostly bark, and also that if you have a non-lethal means of stopping an attack–say a club or pepper-spray–thats what should be used. For these guys to pull out their guns and start blasting is indicative of a scary mentality that would also promote speeding around town in high speed chases and beating unconscious people; it’s just not smart police work!
When will the police learn that just because they CAN use extreme force, doesn’t mean they necessarily should? Humans evolved past brute-force-only tactics and moved on to solving problems with our brains long ago, when will cops?

Do Dah Day dates and activities have been announced! It will be Saturday, May 16th and the main parade starts at 11am. If you’re not familiar with it, Do Dah Day is an event in the Highland area parks that hosts literally thousands of people AND THEIR DOGS! You just come and bring your dog and hang out. Bands will be playing, organizations will be giving away all sorts of free stuff to your dog, and it’s all for a good cause: local animal charities.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to come out just to admire and creep on all the amazing dogs that will be there. Of course, if you’re like me, you’ll also have to be admiring from afar because your mutt will be in attack mode.
This year, they’re also adding Do Dah Eve the night before at Nana Funk’s in the Lakeview District to raise money for local animal charities.
See you there!
