Dogs vs. Pigs… with Guns

June 2nd, 2009

This was one of the dogs shot by the Birmingham Pig Dept. this week in Southside. It seems the BPD just can’t stay out of the news for overly-aggressive behavior. Of course, they are trying to say they were fearing for their lives, but almost every normal person in the world knows that dogs are mostly bark, and also that if you have a non-lethal means of stopping an attack–say a club or pepper-spray–thats what should be used. For these guys to pull out their guns and start blasting is indicative of a scary mentality that would also promote speeding around town in high speed chases and beating unconscious people; it’s just not smart police work!

When will the police learn that just because they CAN use extreme force, doesn’t mean they necessarily should? Humans evolved past brute-force-only tactics and moved on to solving problems with our brains long ago, when will cops?

Cops Gone Wild… as Usual

May 20th, 2009

Well a few of Birmingham’s finest have finally had to answer for an increasingly typical reckless abuse of power. So far, I’ve heard this entire 20 minute chase, in which perhaps hundreds of lives were at risk, was because of “potential drug activity.” In the long version of the chase, you can see them barreling through red lights without even considering slowing down.

As always, I’m not approving of the guy running from the cops, but I am adamantly disapproving of the decision made by the cops to chase after him, which ultimately got the emotions flowing that lead to them beating an unconscious person. It just didn’t have to be like this. The guy has a house; go arrest him later. Do some real police work! Innocent lives aren’t worth chasing a “potential” drug criminal.
