EPA Taking Another Look at AL’s Weak Air Pollution Rules

Alabama has some rules that allow companies in the state to pollute the air more than in other states. These lax rules were approved by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) under George W. Bush. Now, under Obama, the EPA has decided to take another look at the rules which may lead to stricter air pollution rules for the state.
Of course, the good people at Alabama Power whose coal-burning plants will be affected think that making the pollution rules more strict wouldn’t be very “industry-friendly.” Obviously! Industry is all about placing the cost of their business on other people. In this case, the pollution that Alabama Power doesn’t currently have to worry about probably causes health issues to people in surrounding areas–which I would guess are lower class and least likely to sue and most likely to need the tax payers to pick up the medical bill. If these plants were near wealthy neighborhoods, like where the Alabama Power executives live, I’m sure there would already be stricter rules.
So let’s just hope the EPA pulls through on this one and actually makes companies in the state clean up their act!
